Meaning
Measurement of height from fundus of uterus to the upper border of symphysis pubis.
After 24 weeks, the SFH measured in cm. corresponds to the number of weeks up to 36 weeks. A variation of +/-2cm is accepted as normal. Variation beyond the normal range needs further evaluation (a lag of 4cm or more suggests growth restriction.) It is a fairly sensitive parameter (30-80%).
SFH = 24-36 weeks=[Gestational age +/-2 cm.]
Ex. If Gestational age is 28 weeks then the SFH is either 30 cm (28+2cm=30cm) or 26 cm (28-2cm=26cm).
Procedure
- Explain the procedure to the mother to gain her confidence.
- Instruct the mother to empty her bladder. Mother should lie flat on her back.
- The upper border of the fundus is located by the ulnar border of the left hand and this point is marked.
- The distance between the upper border of symphysis pubis up to the marked point measured by a tape in centimeter.

Weeks of Gestation | Approximate expected location of fundus height at various weeks of Gestation |
12 | At the level of symphysis pubis. |
16 | Midway between umbilicus and symphysis pubis. |
22-24 | At the level of umbilicus. |
28 | 1/3 above the symphysis pubis and 2/3 below the xiphoid process of sternum. |
32 | Midway between the umbilicus and xiphoid process of sternum , head is not Engaged. |
36 | At the xiphoid process of sternum. |
40 | Midway between the umbilicus and xiphoid process of sternum , head is Engaged. |
At term the SFH is 40cm. with mother of normal BMI
